1. What can I use Inputlog for?
Inputlog is a logging program that enables you to record every keystroke, mouse event and dictated speech input. The program is mainly used in writing research (e.g. developmental studies, cognitive writing processes etc.) and offers different types of descriptive analyses.
However, because the program logs data in all programs that run in a Windows environment it can be a useful research tool in other domains as well. For instance, usability research (e.g. evaluation of web form completion), programming research (e.g. modularity in programming environments), ergonomic studies (e.g. effect of keyboard lay outs) or typewriting studies (e.g. analysis of typewriting skills).

2. How can I receive Inputlog?
You can download Inputlog from this website.
|
3. How much does Inputlog cost?
Inputlog has been developed for research purposes. Therefore, researchers are invited to download Inputlog as a freeware product. However, because we are interested to know which researchers are using Inputlog, we have protected the setup with a password. If you send us an email in which you describe your research project in a few lines, you will receive an unlock code for the installation of Inputlog.
If you publish research in which you have used Inputlog, please refer to Leijten, M. & Van Waes, L. (2006). Inputlog: New Perspectives on the Logging of On-Line Writing. In K.P.H. Sullivan & E. Lindgren (Eds.), Studies in Writing: Vol. 18. Computer Key-Stroke Logging and Writing: Methods and Applications (pp.73-94). Oxford: Elsevier.

4. What are the computer requirements to use Inputlog?
The minimum requirements to run inputlog are
Microsoft Framework 2.0
Visual studio
Microsoft Windows XP or Vista
Microsoft Word XP or later versions
Pentium III, 400 Mhz, 128mb RAM, 50MB additional diskspace

5. Do I need a new activation code?
No, if you have received an activation code for Inputlog 1.0 or later you can use the same code for later versions of Inputlog.
|
6. Can I generate the analyses in Inputlog 2.0 Beta from my old IDF-files recorded with a previous version of Inputlog?
Yes, that's no problem. The only difference is that the 'recorded time' will not be displayed in the regenerated outputs. Because the analyses in Inputlog 2.0 have been refined, differences in the output can occur. The 'general file' always provides you with detailed information about every logging event and allows you to evaluate the analyses in detail.
|
7. Can I use the output of the various analyses of Inputlog in other programs?
Yes. Inputlog 1.4 generates output in Excel format. In Inputlog 2.0 we have opted for a more universal and flexible output format: XML. You can view the generated files in every browser (e.g. Internet Explorer or Mozilla). However, most recent versions of statistical programs (e.g. SPPS and SAS) and spreadsheet programs (like Excel) have an import function that allows you to open the output files of the analyses. This allows you to further analyze and combine the outputs.

8. Do I need Dragon Naturally Speaking to log speech input?
Yes. The logging of the input of dictated speech is dependent on the speech recognition software developed by Nuance, Dragon Naturally Speaking (versions 8 and 9). The logging and merging facilities were developed in close collaboration.
